Honorable Mention: Halo 3 (2007) Halo 3 has a lot going for it. It has a really fun multiplayer and an excellent online ranking system. Unfortunately, it doesnt have much more to offer than Halo 2 did, and the single player campaign is abysmal, keeping it relatively off of this list.
10: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) Easily the best game of the Sonic series. Fast gameplay, fun level design and no annoying voice work.
9: Starfox 64 (1997) Voice acting? A Rumble pack? Barrel Rolls?! Nintendo crammed a lot of their firsts into an hour of awesome gameplay.
8: Goldeneye 64 (1997) Some games manage to completely change the perception of what a videogame can be. Rares strategy of doing nearly everything different than the norm paid off big time. The multiplayer alone kept players going for years. This is without a doubt the best game of its era.
7: Super Mario 64 DS (2004) This remake was a perfect way to launch Nintendos latest handheld system. It took an eight year old game and brought it up to todays standards while keeping the fun and nostalgia of the original. It also added about 40% more stuff to do, which is always a good idea.
6: Star Wars: Jedi Academy (2004) Ive always been a fan of the Jedi Knight games, from Dark Forces to the series spiritual successor, Force Unleashed. Jedi Academy just happened to be the most fun, with nearly every mission providing the player with a new slant on its style of gameplay.
5: Prey (2005) This may be an unpopular choice. Preys multiplayer certainly isnt a phenomenon or anything but its single player tells a really neat story in an interesting and unique way, and only one other game on this list has managed to make better use of gravity.
4: Portal (2007) You know that game I was talking about before? Its this one. Mind bending puzzles and a cynically hilarious artificial intelligence make this game playable over and over again.
3: Call of Duty 4 (2007) Simply the most amazing multiplayer shooting experience available today. It has a ranking system second to none, realistic maps and varied gameplay.
2: Mario Kart DS (2005) Even Im surprised this game is so high on this list. Mario certainly has proved himself a more enduring franchise than Sonic, that much is clear. This game has 32 tracks, 12 drivers and nearly 40 karts. Combine that with the DSs fast Wi-Fi capability and youve got an awesome game.
1: Half-Life 2 (2004) As if there was any doubt. This is art house gaming at its finest. It combines professional storytelling with cinematic presentation while never slowing down or taking control away from the player. If this game were to come out today, four years later, it would still be as well received as it was in 2004.
So thats it. You may have noticed there arent any RPGs on this list. Thats because well, I dont like RPGs. But you might! So hit me back with your list if you want to, Id love to take a look at it.
